Terezin is unique among concentration camps, as it was used not only as a work and transit camp for Jews, but also as a propoganda tool in the attempt to hide the horrors of the Holocaust from the outside world. The town was even inspected by the Red Cross, whose delegates the Nazis successfully fooled into believing it was a functioning, happy society of Jews preparing for life in the New Europe. On this tour we'll take you to both the Small Fortress outside the town of
Terezin, and the main
Terezin ghetto itself. The Small Fortress was always a prison, used by the Gestapo to house political prisoners (which meant anyone from resistance fighters to Jews caught out after curfew). The main ghetto itself was a town for military families, all of whom were removed to make way for a new population of prisoners. We'll take you to the Memorial Museum, and enable you to see things through the eyes of the camp's inmates by visiting the collection of artwork they secretly produced. You can visit the Crematorium, the National Cemetery constructed to commemorate the camp's victims, and even a hidden synagogue used without the knowledge of camp supervisors.
